Linkedin is not your friend
Feeling stuck in your career? You're not alone, and endless scrolling on LinkedIn might not help. Here's what can: ⏸ Take a Break: Spend less time on LinkedIn. Your own answers are waiting to be found, not on a screen but within you. 🗣 Talk to People: Chat with friends or colleagues. You'll see everyone's figuring things out, just like you. 🌳 Go Outside: Leave the desk and go for a walk or bike ride. It's amazing what fresh air can do for your thoughts. These aren't quick fixes, but they're steps towards feeling more in control and less confused about your job situation.

Beware of Assumptions
This morning, an incident stirred a deep self-reflection. I was watching a guy walking his dog, occasionally sipping from a can of cider. My mind automatically went to "He must be an alcoholic." But why was I so quick to judge? 🤷 On reflection afterwards, I realised I knew NOTHING about this man's life. Perhaps he had just finished a night shift. Maybe he was grappling with devastating news. Or, he might just like a morning cider. This brought another thought: judgement. His action – drinking in the morning – isn't the societal norm, prompting my immediate conclusion. It’s human to lean on societal norms and heuristics to navigate daily complexities. But these shortcuts aren't FACTS, and misinterpretation can be easy.

The Power of Perspective Shifting
Perspective shifting is a powerful tool for unlocking alternative ways of looking at the same problem. It works by taking a step back from the way you currently see the challenge and applying a different lens. It's helped me immeasurably in some of my biggest decisions and can help you too. If you're nodding away to this video thinking 'this sounds just like where i'm at' you're not alone. We get rooted in our perspectives and this causes a tunnel vision where we can only see the problem from one place. Stepping back and uncoupling ourselves from 'the way we dealt with it last time' can bring fresh approaches to problem solving and unlock creative thought.

Perfection over progress
It's often said that perfection is the enemy of creativity. I've found though that for me, perfection is the enemy of progress. In my experience, the pursuit of perfection has both hindered my ability to push forward and in some cases stopped me dead in my tracks, fixated on the notion that if it can't be perfect there is no point even trying. There is hope though! Progress is incremental, atomic and habitual; One step at a time, slowly slowly catchy monkey. Unlike perfection, progression is measurable, it's increasingly better times for that 10km run, it's being able to hold your breath underwater for 1 second longer, it's writing 100 words a day instead of trying to write a book.

Stories we tell ourselves
The narratives we tell ourselves are powerful things. So influential in fact, that they not only hardwire our view on the past, they also narrow our field of vision for the future too. For a long time I held a very rigid narrative about my career path and it overshadowed any achievements or success I had. I didn't celebrates wins or tell my friends excitedly what i did, because well, what was there to be proud of. I was stuck in a fifteen year funk all because of something i told myself when I was 21. The good news is though, narratives can easily be recalibrated by shifting perspective and acknowledging that was then and this is now.
